Lifestyle Family Photography FAQs

What is lifestyle family photography?

The definition of lifestyle photography according to Wikipedia is “a kind of photography that mainly aims to capture portrait/people in situations, real-life events or milestones in an artistic manner and the art of the everyday. The primary goal is to tell stories about people’s lives or to inspire people in different times.” Lifestyle family photography aims to capture what life feels like at any given moment in time. The goal is to tell the story of your life with your family.

Where will the session take place?

We will decide on where to have the session together. We can either shoot in your home or in a location of your choosing. You should choose a location that fits your style and personality.

What time will the session be?

I use natural light for all my photography, so the timing of the session depends on light. For in-home shoots, the session would preferably be in the late morning. Most homes are usually best lit at that time of day.

For an outdoor session, we would shoot in the late afternoon/early evening  to avoid the harsh mid-day sun. Shooting one to two hours before sunset provides a gorgeous setting and atmosphere.

What should I expect?

Although this is a lifestyle session, I will provide gentle guidance to facilitate moments of connection. Remember the goal is not to get everyone looking at the camera and smiling at the same time but to capture relaxed and natural images of your family’s connection. What’s important is that everyone relaxes and we capture the moment in time as it unfolds.

Most children are not usually fond of being told to pose or smile. It is best if we give children the time to relax, be themselves and try to capture their natural selves. Don’t worry if your child is running about and is being active, lifestyle images can still be captured during those moments. To get the most out of the session, please make sure that your little one(s) have had adequate rest, snacks and water. Before the session, please let them know that you will be meeting with a family friend that will be taking pictures of them. This way it won’t be a complete surprise when they see the lady with the camera.

How long will the session be?

Family sessions take 30-60 minutes.

What should I wear?

Your wardrobe should be comfortable and should reflect your personality. Avoid clothing with writing or loud graphics. I don’t recommend matching clothing but rather coordinating clothing.

When will I get my pictures?

Your reveal and design appointment will be scheduled within four weeks from the date of your session.

When will I get my products?

Your products will be made available four to six weeks after your viewing and ordering session.

How much will it cost?

Lifestyle Newborn Photography FAQs

***Due to COVID-19, all newborn sessions will be held outdoors (at-home in the yard or at an outdoor location) until further notice.***

What is lifestyle newborn photography?

When most people think about newborn photography, they think about traditional posed newborn photography. This style of photography includes images of babies (usually asleep) in various poses on blankets and props. This style of photography may also include studio lighting and backdrops.

With lifestyle newborn/baby photography, the baby is photographed in his or her natural surroundings, at home with their family. The baby is also photographed in poses that they move into unaided. In most cases natural light is used for this type of photography.

What should you expect on the day of the session?

When I arrive, I will walk around the house to find the best light for the session. In most cases, the best light can be found in the nursery, master bedroom and living room. However, we’ll work with the best lit areas in your home. I know what it’s like to have a newborn, so please don’t feel like you have to do a major cleaning of the entire house before I arrive. However, please clear away anything that you don’t want to appear in your photos.

The baby will determine the flow of the session. If the baby is asleep when I arrive, I will start with some crib and nursery shots. If the baby is awake and hungry, I can start with some feeding shots or nursing shots (only if you are comfortable with this). If the baby needs a diaper change, I can document that as well. We will just go with the flow.

Although this is a lifestyle session, I will provide gentle guidance to facilitate moments of connection. I may also need to move some things around (furniture, decor, etc) to avoid distractions in the images, however I promise to leave everything as I found it.

How should I prep my baby for the session?

Your baby is perfect just they way they are. I suggest that you dress your baby in a simple form fitting onsie with no graphics or words. Please prepare any special items (favorite swaddle blankets, hats, etc) prior to my arrival. I don’t do any major posing but will take photos of the baby in any natural poses or positions. I also do not have any expectations on how the baby needs to be; alert and awake is fine, fast asleep is fine. The baby will guide the session. What’s important is that everyone relaxes and we capture this moment in time as it unfolds.

How long will the session take?

Baby/newborn sessions typically take 1 - 1.5 hours. This includes individual photographs of the baby, as well as photographs with mom/dad/family.

What should I wear?

I recommend neutral colors for the session. I also recommend wearing clothes that are comfortable for snuggling with your baby during the session.

When will I get my pictures?

Your reveal and design appointment will be scheduled within four weeks from the date of your session.

When will I get my products?

Your products will be made available four to six weeks after your viewing and ordering session.
