4 Reasons Why Spring is a great Season for Family Photos in Maryland

Maryland Family spring photos during lifestyle family session

As a Maryland family photographer, I get asked when is the best season to schedule a family photo shoot. While fall is a popular time of the year to schedule a session, spring is also a great time for family photos. Here are four reasons why spring is a great season for family photos in Maryland.

1. Celebrate the end winter

At the end of a long winter, there is nothing better than getting out of the house into the fresh air and warm weather of spring. It’s also a great time to document any milestones that happened during the winter. Did you have a baby during winter? Did your baby start crawling or walking during winter? Did your baby celebrate a birthday during the winter? Did you older child have a growth spurt during winter? Spring is a great time to celebrate the changing seasons and your changing family. It’s also just a great time to spend some time as a family together while enjoying all the colors of nature that come back in the spring.

2. Enjoy the mild weather

Maryland weather can be quite unpredictable! You can go from a warm sunny day on one day to snow the very next day. One thing that is always certain is we always have extremely hot summer days. Family photo sessions in the summer are lots of fun, but when the weather gets to be a bit too hot, it’s a bit more of a challenge to keep everyone happy. Hot temperatures can also bring lots of sweating and shiny faces, which can add to the challenge. Fall sessions can also be a bit unpredictable if winter temperatures come sooner than expected. Spring has pleasant weather that just works better for family portraits.

3. The days are longer, but not too long

The best time of day to schedule a family photography session is during golden hour. Golden hour is the time right before sunset or right after sunrise when the sun is low in the sky. The sun’s low position in the horizon creates a gorgeous golden glow that is very flattering which is why it’s perfect for family photography sessions. In spring, the days have started getting longer which gives you more time to get your session in, without it being too late with the longer days of summer. Younger kids do better when the sunset is a bit earlier, so it’s a great time to schedule a session that works better for your kids bedtime schedule.

4. Beat the fall rush

Most families wait until the fall to book a session because they are getting ready to print out holiday cards. This means that fall can get really busy and your favorite photographer may not be available. Why not beat the fall rush and schedule your session for the spring? This way, your photographer will have better availability and you can book a session that works best for your schedule. This still doesn’t mean you should wait to reserve your session, there is still a rush in spring, just not as big as the one in fall. So contact your photographer before winter ends, so that you can get your choice of dates for a spring session. Booking your session early will help you beat the spring rush and the fall rush later in the year!
